VITALITY

AUGUST 2013

There has been a long history of partnerships between dance and contemporary-classical music. In 2010, we began brainstorming how to create connections between the choreographers of DirtyFeet and composers of Chronology Arts with a view of establishing new creative partnerships, and a collaborative project was born. Vitality presents connections between three choreographers and composers from each company, through their movement and sound. They have each taken a different approach to the collaboration to create three diverse works, exploring new connections between unique perspectives. This project, along with others, continues the history of the relationship between sound and movement, bringing their worlds closer together. Temporal, transitional – like life – dance and music express a reflection on our own vitality. Andrew Batt-Rawden, Anthea Doropoulos & Sarah Fiddaman.

Morphic is a dance theatre and music work examining the relationships and dependencies we have with technology and the idiosyncrasies that are manifested as a result. The work draws parallels between the 21st century digital evolution and the first known prehistoric bird, the Archaeopteryx, considered to be the pivotal animal between avian dinosaurs and modern bird species. Just as winged species were instinctively driven to adapt themselves to take full flight, the human race is also driven by a constant demand to update, upgrade and #hashtag.

The original music draws from musique concrète and contemporary classical styles. The “Morphic” score includes a sample of the composer’s string quartet work “28”, composed for and recorded by the NOISE quartet by Bob Scott and Lyle Chan released on Vexations840.

A woman in a little black dress and high heels finds herself trapped in a pool of light. Navigating what resembles an imaginary obstacle course, she opens herself up to invisible forces that she might or might not be able to control. Kicking off the artistic partnership between DirtyFeet and Chronology Arts, Quest was the first piece that was made for Vitality. It was developed throughout 2011 and premiered as part of Chronology Arts’ Synchronicity program at Seymour Centre in early 2012. It was also presented at Campbelltown Arts Centre as part of last year’s Aurora Festival of Living Music. We are very excited that the piece is finally shown in the context that it was originally made for.
